Leading Retailers in the US
According to the latest data from the National Retail Federation, Walmart still maintains the position of the top USA retailer.
Walmart raked in $459.51 billion in retail sales in 2021 alone. This depicts a 6.6% year-over-year increase. The US share of their sales also went up by 5%. Sales from USA accounted for 79% of their worldwide sales in 2020 and in 2021 this figure went up by 84%.
They are really doing well and this has necessitated expansion. In 2020, they had 5,253 stores which was increased to 5,326 in 2021. When you factor in the tremendous growth that they are experiencing, the addition of stores should not come as a surprise to you.
There are no signs of slowing down for this top US retailer so more is anticipated from them in 2022. According to a recent fiscal data, Walmart recorded $141.6 billion in revenue for Q1 2022. This showed a 2.4% yearly increase.
A very substantial amount of this revenue growth is from the US market. In USA, net sales increased by 4%. So it went from $93.2 billion in the first quarter of 2021, to $96.9 billion in the first quarter of 2022.
The second top US retailer that we will be discussing in this write up is Amazon. In 2021, Amazon recorded $217.79 billion in USA sales. This depicts a staggering 12.6% yearly increase.
Just as is the case with Walmart, most of Amazon’s global sales is from the US. In 2021 alone, the US sales accounted for 66% of their worldwide sales.
Next on our list of largest retailers in the US is Costco Wholesale. Costco Wholesale had a 15.8% increase in US sales as they made $140.41 billion in 2021.
Following Costco Wholesale is Home Depot. They recorded a 15.1% increase in sales and raked in $140.06 billion in 2021.
There is also the Kroger Co. who had a 3.9% increase in sales and made $136.49 billion in 2021.
